if it is assumed that the genes are distributed in a single line along the chromosome and that, in general, the distance between two genes in a chromosome is proportional to the amount of crossing over between them, there is a basis for constructing a gene map of each chromosome for which there are sufficient data, and for actually locating the genes in a definite position in the chromatin.
