homoeotic genehomöotisches Gen (ger.)

  • A homeobox gene in which mutations can transform part or whole of a body segment into the corresponding part of another segment. Homeotic genes are involved in the development of the basic body plan of metamerically segmented animals. (Oxford Dict. of Zoology 2009)

Goldschmidt (1938) mentioned this fact as supporting his hypothesis that there are no “genes” but that the chromosomes themselves act as units in heredity in controlling the normal development of the animal. On this basis there is no accidental clustering of homnoeotic genes in this region; rather, this whole region of the right arm of the third chromiosomne acts in normal development in regulating, the determination and development of the imaginal discs.

Other experiments are under way to test the effects of the “growth rate” genes, dachs, dachsous, four-jointed, and combgap, and the homoeotic genes, bithorax, tetraltera, and aristapedia, on the metabolism of the imaginal discs involved.
