    we have paid particular attention to the pre-Darwinian school of comparative anatomy and embryology—that extending from Cuvier to Owen—and its concern with ‘laws of form’. In this alternative tradition of ‘Rational Morphology’ we believe can be found the germ of a more satisfactory approach to biological organization which involves a structuralist conceptualization of the organismic domain.
