  1936 sprach Konrad Lorenz auf gemeinsame Einladung beider Gesellscliaften im Harnack-Haus. Hier sah er erstmals Erich v. Holst persönlich, und alsbald wurde beiden klar, daß der Physiologe und der Ethologe auf getrennten Wegen dem gleichen Ziel einer künftigen Ethophysiologie zusteuerten: Instinkte im Sinne von Kopnrad Lorenz sind zentralnervöse Automatismen im Sinne Erich v. Holsts.
