  Da der Begriff der Orthogenese von verschiedenen Forschern nach Inhalt und Umfang sehr verschieden aufgefaßt wird, so gehe ich noch etwas näher auf ihn ein. Ich definire: Orthogenesis ist eine bestimmt gerichtete Evolution einer Art, an der alle Individuen mehr oder weniger Antheil haben. Im Gegensatz zu ihr steht eine andere Art geradliniger Evolution, welche ich »Orthoselection« nennen will; sie gilt nur für Anpassungen und bedeutet, daß Selection nach einer bestimmten Richtung durch Generationen hindurch die begünstigten Individuen auswählt, den Rest eliminirt und so langsam die betreffende Anpassung »züchtet«, d.h. von Stufe zu Stufe hebt […] Unter Orthoselection ist selbstverständlich keine besondere Art der Auslese gemeint, sondern es soll damit nur eine geradlinige phyletische Wirkungsweise der Zuchtwahl bezeichnet werden.

  To attribute orthogenetic results to natural selection is quite right, and some one has proposed the name orthoselection to distinguish orthogenetic evolution as produced by selection from such results produced independently, or at least partly independently of selection.
