  Pour connaître à fond la végétation il faut connaître la flore, mais on peut avoir étudié la flora sans s'être rendu un compte exact et complet de la végétation. La flore d'un pays et sa végétation sont donc deux choses différentes qu'il ne faut pas confondre: la première s'entend surtout du nombre des formes végétales distinctes qu'on y observe, la seconde de leurs proportions et de leur association.
