since, in the electric polarity of the cell, we are dealing with a system from which electrical energy is continuously liberated […] and therefore a system which appears to be irreversible, it follows that the ‘equilibrium’ responsible for the electric potential cannot be of the ordinary type of stable equilibrium in a closed system. We shall designate the type of equilibrium with which we are concerned in continuous bio-electric currents as a flux equilibrium.

Der Organismus ist nicht ein nach außen abgeschlossenes System, das stets die identischen Bestandteile enthält; er ist vielmehr ein offenes System, das sich in seinen Massenbeziehungen konstant erhält bei fortwährendem Wechsel der es aufbauenden Stoffe und Energien, und in welches fortwährend Bestandteile von außen ein- und aus dem fortwährend andere austreten. Diese Erhaltung im Wechsel der Elemente sei als „Fließgleichgewicht“ bezeichnet.
