  The purpose of our analysis is threefold. First, to dispute definitions of landscape ecology which involve a purely natural scientific interpretation of the term ‘landscape’ and which, either openly or tacitly, reject any relation between the conception of landscape and human perceptions and cultural meanings. Second, to challenge the increasingly popular view that landscape ecology is (or should be) an inter- or transdisciplinary science or research programme comprising not only several natural sciences but also social sciences and humanities. This is not to deny that environmental research, sustainability research, environmental management, and so on, are (and should be) interdisciplinary. Third, as an alternative to both of these definitions, to highlight and define a research agenda of landscape ecology that is widespread in practice but, as far as we know, has not yet been explicitly defined, namely, landscape ecology as ‘ecology guided by cultural meanings of lifeworldly landscapes’. These lifeworldly landscapes are defined primarily according to aesthetic and socio-cultural criteria, and they are cherished because they symbolize feelings of belonging and identity as well as feelings of freedom and naturalness, and so on. We argue that it is necessary both to establish a strict distinction between natural scientific (e.g. ecological) views and aesthetic-symbolic views of nature, given that each deals with categorically distinct objects, and, at the same time, to combine both sets of views within environmental research—but not under the designation ‘landscape ecology’
