Besides this, the steady amassing of cytological, genetical, ecological, physiological, and behaviour data with an eye on their taxonomic bearings will clearly be needed. As such work proceeds, the New Systematics will gradually come into being. It will in some ways doubtless help classical taxonomy in its practical pigeon-holing functions; it will give a much more detailed picture of the actual facts of the diversity of organic nature and its distribution in groups and in character-gradients over the globe; it will reveal many facts and principles of great importance to general biology; and through it taxonomy will become the field of major interest for all those concerned with the study of evolution at work.
