when we consider the differences in the temper, the manners and dispositions of these two animals, and above all, the impossibility os mixing them so as to produce a common or intermediate species capable of propagating and transmitting in the same manner as other distinct species, the notion that the horse and the ass are the same species will appear to be without any solid foundation.

Die Zahl der Säugthiere schätzt Herr von Büffon nur auf zweihundert verschiedene Gattungen. Gewiß kommt es hier darauf an, zu bestimmen, was eigentliche Gattungen, und was nur Spielarten sind. Ich gestehe, ich habe bisher noch keine Regel gefunden, worauf man sich in allen Fällen so gut verlassen könnte, als eben diejenige, welche Herr von Büffon zum Grunde legt, nahmlich, daß sich zwo verschiedene Gattungen nicht vermischen und Zwischenarten oder Bastarte erzeugen.
