  Durch diesen Mechanismus [der Erzeugung von Empfindungen durch Rückkehr des Reizes zur Peripherie des Nervensystems] werden […] die einer komplizierten Zweckbewegung entsprechenden Bewegungsempfindungen autogen vom Organismus selbst erzeugt, zugleich in einer gesetzmäßigen, festen Reihe zeitlich aneinander gebunden und einheitlich zusammengefaßt.   Una máquina autopoiética es una máquina organizada como un sistema de procesos de producción de componentes concatenados de tal manera que producen componentes que: i) generan los procesos (relaciones) de producción que los producen a través de sus continuas interactiones y transformaciones, y ii) constituyen a la máquina como una unidad en el espacio físico. Por consiguiente, una máquina autopoiética continuamente específica y produce su propria organización a través de la producción de sus proprios componentes, bajo condiciones de continua perturbación y compensación de esas perturbaciones (producción de componentes). Podemos decir entonces que una máquina autopoiética es un sistema homeostático que tiene a su propria organización como la variable que mantiene constante.   1980

  An autopoietic machine is a machine organized (defined as a unity) as a network of processes of production (transformation and destruction) of components that produces the components which: (i) through their interactions and transformations continuously regenerate and realize the network of processes (relations) that produced them; and (ii) constitute it (the machine) as a concrete unity in the space in which they (the components) exist by specifying the topological domain of its realization as such a network. It follows that an autopoietic machine continuously generates and specifies its own organization through its operation as a system of production of its own components […] the notion of autopoiesis is necessary and sufficient to characterize the organization of living systems.
