gene mapGenkarte (ger.)

  • A representation of the relative order and distance apart of the genes of a chromosome. Also: the nucleotide sequence of all or part of a chromosome or genome. (OED 2011)

if it is assumed that the genes are distributed in a single line along the chromosome and that, in general, the distance between two genes in a chromosome is proportional to the amount of crossing over between them, there is a basis for constructing a gene map of each chromosome for which there are sufficient data, and for actually locating the genes in a definite position in the chromatin.

It should be possible gradually to determine the arrangement of ends of the various chromosomes in various forms, the essential first step in the construction of gene maps in the case of circle-bearing forms.
